HUNTSVILLE, Alabama ? Although Alabama?s controversial immigration law has been put on hold for the past few months while it is being debated in court, it seems as though state officials are not willing to wait. A decision on the bill is expected this week, but Governor Robert Bentley could not wait until then. On Monday, he unveiled a new plan in the ongoing quest to regulate illegal immigration, a state-developed computer system that is able to verify citizenship almost instantly.
The system is called AL-Verify. However, some argue that the system is not needed yet since a judge hasn?t passed the final verdict on the immigration bill. John McMillan, with the Alabama Commission of Agriculture and Industries, says he will be keeping an eye out for the latest developments. ?Some of our farmers have been in talks with legislators. I have been involved in some of those meetings, and my role is going to be keeping legislators informed of what I see out there on the ground,? said McMillan.
McMillan, along with countless other Alabama residents and officials, are waiting to see what will happen with the bill. Whether it will pass or be stripped of certain provisions. However, as some people wait on the sidelines, others, like the governor and his cabinet members, are moving forward with their plans and launching the AL-Verify program. ?We provided an automated way to be compliant so the process for getting a title or a tag hasn?t really changed but because of the immigration bill we had a compliance issue. Now with this technology we?ve solved the compliance issue,? said Julie Magee, the Commissioner for the Department of Revenue. Magee said that the program is already live. The way it works is that a suspect?s driver?s license information is inputted into the system and the program lets you know whether the information is valid or not.
Those in opposition to the anti-illegal immigration law argue that state officials should not be devising any new policies or plans because the law hasn?t even gone into effect yet. ?I think it?s kind of premature of the state to be undertaking new actions in pursuit of a law that we don?t even know is going to be upheld yet,? said Allison Neal , Legal Director for ACLU. However, state enforcement officers are saying they are merely following state orders. ?We always enforce the laws passed by the legislature and signed by the governor in the state of Alabama and that?s what every law enforcement officer is there to do,? said Col. Hugh McCall with the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
Regardless of what the final decision on the Alabama bill will be, one thing is for sure ? the debate over illegal immigration will be far from over. An illegal immigrant is anyone residing in the country without a valid green card, work visa or any other legal document. Those who are found to be staying in the U.S. illegally will be deported back to their home country unless they can apply and qualify for legal status.
