TOKYO (AP) ? Toyota's president unveiled a futuristic concept car resembling a giant smartphone to demonstrate how Japan's top automaker is trying to take the lead in technology at the upcoming Tokyo auto show.

Toyota Motor Corp. will also be showing an electric vehicle, set for launch next year, and a tiny version of the hit Prius gas-electric hybrid at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens to the public this weekend.

But the automaker's president, Akio Toyoda, chose to focus on the experimental Fun-Vii, which he called "a smartphone on four wheels" at Monday's preview of what Toyota is displaying at the show.

The car works like a personal computer and allows drivers to connect with dealers and others with a tap of a touch-panel door.

"A car must appeal to our emotions," Toyoda said, using the Japanese term "waku waku doki doki," referring to a heart aflutter with anticipation.

Toyota's booth will be a major attraction at the biannual Tokyo exhibition for the auto industry. Toyota said the Fun Vii was an example of what might be in the works in "20XX," giving no dates.

The Tokyo show has been scaled back in recent years as U.S. and European automakers increasingly look to China and other places where growth potential is greater. U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co. isn't even taking part in the show.

Toyota's electric vehicle FT-EV III, still a concept or test model, doesn't have a price yet, but is designed for short trips such as grocery shopping and work commutes, running 105 kilometers (65 miles) on one full charge.

The new small hybrid will be named Aqua in Japan, where it goes on sale next month. Overseas dates are undecided. Outside Japan it will be sold as a Prius.

Japan's automakers, already battered by years of sales stagnation at home, took another hit from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, which damaged part suppliers in northeastern Japan, and forced the car makers to cut back production.

The forecast of demand for new passenger cars in Japan this year has been cut to 3.58 million vehicles from an earlier 3.78 million by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association.

Toru Hatano, auto analyst for IHS Automotive in Tokyo, believes fuel efficient hybrid models will be popular with Japanese consumers, and Toyota has an edge.

"The biggest obstacle has to do with costs, and you need to boost vehicle numbers if you hope to bring down costs" he said. "Toyota has more hybrids on the market than do rivals, and that gives Toyota an advantage."

Toyota has sold more than 3.4 million hybrids worldwide so far. Honda Motor Co., which has also been aggressive with hybrid technology, has sold 770,000 hybrids worldwide.

Toyota is also premiering a fuel-cell concept vehicle, FCV-R, at the show.

Zero-emission fuel cell vehicles, which run on hydrogen, have been viewed as impractical because of costs. Toyota said the FCV-R is a "practical" fuel-cell, planned for 2015, but didn't give its price.

"I felt as though my heart was going to break," Toyoda said of the turmoil after the March disaster. "It is precisely because we are in such times we must move forward with our dreams."

(AP) ? Andrew Luck walked back into the overcrowded home locker room at Stanford Stadium, greeted by hugs and handshakes and serenaded with a chant that suited him just perfectly.

"Macho, Macho man!" teammates bellowed, singing the lyrics to the Village People's famous song. "I want to be a Macho man!"

Only one has earned that title on The Farm.

Luck set the school record for the most career touchdown passes and eclipsed his own single-season mark, throwing for 233 yards and four scores to lead fourth-ranked Stanford past No. 22 Notre Dame 28-14 in his home finale Saturday night.

Luck topped John Elway's record of 77 touchdown passes and helped the Cardinal (11-1) build a 21-0 halftime lead. He has thrown for 80 touchdowns in three years ? while it took Elway all four ? and 35 this season.

"There's no player in America like Andrew Luck," Stanford coach David Shaw said. "Forget about the stats. Forget about the comparisons of other guys. It doesn't matter."

Luck of the Irish? Forget it.

Luck is on Stanford's side.

The victory likely vaulted the Cardinal into consideration for an at-large BCS bowl bid for the second straight year ? with the Fiesta Bowl among the leading possible destinations ? but they will not play for a major championship this season. The lone loss to Oregon put the Ducks in the Pac-12 title game out of the North Division and crushed Stanford's dreams of a national title.

"I think one loss, that's great," said Luck, who turned down a chance to be the NFL draft's top pick this year. "We've been on a 23-2 run for a while, I think it's pretty impressive. We put ourselves in position to be in a good bowl game, and that's what we wanted to do."

Notre Dame's stumbled at the finish line again.

Tommy Rees threw an interception, lost a fumble and took a bruising blow to the ribs for Notre Dame (8-4) before getting benched. Andrew Hendrix threw for 192 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score in a second-half rally for the Fighting Irish that came up short.

Keeping Stanford close gave the Irish little satisfaction.

"We didn't come here for second prize," said Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly, who would not name a starting quarterback for the bowl game. "We got off to a slow start and battled against it. To me, the scoreboard showed 28-14 and that's not good enough. The slow start put us in a tough position."

Stanford coach David Shaw shined the spotlight on his program and his quarterback's Heisman Trophy campaign with a calculated rip of the "flawed" BCS system this week. The Cardinal's play matched his words for 30 minutes.

A sloppy second half almost took everything else Stanford had worked for this season.

Kelly benched Rees in favor of Hendrix to start the third quarter, and the move pumped some life into a stagnant Irish offense. Notre Dame took advantage of pass interference and roughing the passer penalties for its first score.

Hendrix threw a 6-yard TD to Michael Floyd to slice Stanford's lead to 21-7 halfway through the third quarter. Floyd finished with 95 catches on the year, breaking the single-season mark of 93 set by Golden Tate in 2009.

The Irish were driving for another score when Hendrix overthrew a receiver, the ball was tipped and intercepted by Michael Thomas. When Notre Dame regained possession, Hendrix was sacked by A.J. Tarpley for a 13-yard loss that sent another drive tumbling.

"Consistency is the one thing I have struggled with the most," said Hendrix, who completed 11 of 24 passes.

Only room for one quarterback to steal the show.

Luck quickly connected with Coby Fleener for a 55-yard TD pass to extend Stanford's lead to 28-7 with 5:40 remaining to put the game out of reach. Fleener also caught a 28-yard TD in the first half that gave Luck every major school touchdown record.

Stanford's Senior Day belonged to the redshirt junior.

Luck lobbed a fade to the short corner of the end zone to complete a 3-yard score to Levine Toilolo, giving Stanford a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Even he had to hold back a smile running to the sideline to a swarm of well-wishes from teammates for the records-tying toss.

But Luck lost his rhythm when a back-side blitzer closed the pocket, and he tossed a short pass that Darius Fleming intercepted and returned 35 yards. Notre Dame took over at the Stanford 10 after a 15-yard penalty on Fleener for a horse collar.

Stanford stifled the Irish on consecutive plays and forced a 20-yard field goal that David Ruffer missed wide right.

Luck followed with a 28-yard TD pass to Fleener. The tight end dragged cornerback Robert Blanton the final 10 yards into the end zone, sealing Luck's marks in the school record book.

"I think it's something I'll be able to tell my kids and grandkids when I'm watching Andrew on TV someday," Fleener said. "He's got my Heisman vote."

Egypt unrest casts shadow over polls (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egyptian protesters demanding an end to army rule clashed with police firing tear gas in central Cairo on Saturday in a flare-up that cast another shadow over a parliamentary election billed as the nation's first free vote in decades.

Two days of voting begin on Monday in the first stage of a complex, drawn-out election that will be completed in January.

One protester, Ahmed Sayed, 21, died after being hit by a riot police vehicle in the clashes. His death was the first since a truce between police and protesters on Thursday calmed violence that had killed 41 people around Cairo's Tahrir Square and elsewhere.

Alarmed by the violence, the United States and the European Union have urged a swift handover to civilian rule in a country where prolonged political turmoil has compounded economic woes.

The latest clash occurred near the cabinet office on the second day of a sit-in to protest against the army's appointment of 78-year-old Kamal Ganzouri, a premier under ousted President Hosni Mubarak, to form a "national salvation government."

An army source said the ruling military council held separate talks with presidential candidates Mohamed ElBaradei and Amr Moussa. "I met Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi over the current crisis and discussed ways to resolve it," Moussa told Reuters later, but gave no details.

ElBaradei's office said in a statement that he had been in touch with all relevant parties to "activate the demands of the revolution." It said he had met Tantawi and army chief of staff Sami Enan to discuss these demands, without reaching agreement.

Protest groups have named ElBaradei as their choice to head a civilian body to supervise Egypt's transition to democracy instead of the army council that took over from Mubarak.

Ganzouri met with youth activists, but the April 6 movement, prominent in the anti-Mubarak revolt, disavowed those involved, saying they were "planted by the military council."

Ganzouri told reporters he had not yet offered anyone a ministerial portfolio. "I am ready to sit with all political currents. The new government will have new faces and youth will be part of it as they are the backbone of this nation," he said.

Tahrir Square protesters have dismissed Ganzouri, premier from 1996 to 1999, as another face from the past whose appointment reflects the generals' resistance to change.

A television clip circulated on Facebook in the past 24 hours shows him sitting one seat away from Tantawi on January 25, the first day of Egypt's revolt, as they listen to a speech by former Interior Minister Habib al-Adli, who is on trial with Mubarak on charges of ordering protesters to be killed.

"Down, down with the marshal," a group chanted in Tahrir, near tents set up on grassy patches. They were referring to Tantawi, who was Mubarak's defense minister for 20 years.

ACCIDENTAL KILLING

The Interior Ministry said the protester had been killed by accident, an account backed by Ahmad Zeidan, 18, an activist at the sit-in who said he had seen the youth being run over.

"It wasn't deliberate. They (police) were retreating quickly because (protesters) were throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at them," he said. The demonstrators had come from Tahrir to confront police vehicles apparently heading for the square.

The turmoil of the past week has overshadowed the election, whose initial stage involves Cairo, Alexandria and other areas.

One declared reason for the polling marathon is because judges, who retain public respect for their independence, will supervise the election and there are not enough of them available for a single day of nationwide voting.

Reflecting security concerns, Ahmed al-Zind, head of Egypt's Judges Club, told a news conference the organization had taken out private insurance to cover all the judges involved.

Protesters in Tahrir seemed in two minds about the election.

Emad Mohamed, 35, wearing a hat in Egyptian national colors, had no faith in the vote, saying it would enable Mubarak-era politicians to make a come-back. "We do not think it is in our interest. Where are the new parties?" he asked.

But Yasser Nasr, assisting at a makeshift clinic, said: "They cannot delay elections. It will mess up the situation. Once they happen, hopefully things will improve."

The Muslim Brotherhood and other mainstream parties which have not joined the protesters in Tahrir want the election to go ahead, eager to establish a strong presence in parliament.

They have accepted the army's transition timetable, but the demonstrators are demanding an immediate end to military rule.

Instead, the generals have promised that a new president will be elected by mid-2012, sooner than previously announced.

While tens of thousands packed Tahrir Square for what activists dubbed "Last Chance Friday," at least 5,000 people demonstrated in support of the army in another Cairo square, highlighting splits between youngsters bent on radical reform and people upset by the unrest who want to restore normality.

Ganzouri described his task as thankless and "extremely difficult," saying his priority was to secure the streets and revive the economy. Egypt's pound has hit a seven-year low and foreign reserves have dropped by a third since December 2010.

Protest groups have called for another mass rally on Sunday to press demands for an immediate transfer of power.

Portuguese strike against bailout austerity (Reuters)

LISBON (Reuters) ? Portuguese workers went on strike on Thursday, halting public transport and factories in many parts of the country to protest against harsh austerity measures imposed as the price of an EU/IMF bailout.

The rescue funds are designed to keep Portugal afloat and stem a snowballing euro zone debt crisis, but the painful austerity measures including pay cuts are hugely unpopular and have sent the country into its worst recession in decades.

Highlighting Portugal's economic woes, Fitch Ratings on Thursday cut its credit standing to just below investment grade.

Planes were grounded, trains halted and most public services interrupted as workers across the nation of 11 million protested against job losses, tax hikes and pay cuts agreed between Portugal and the troika of lenders -- the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund.

"There is a strong sentiment of outrage, which has to make us reflect a lot about the situation," said Manuel Carvalho da Silva, head of the 750,000-strong CGTP union.

He said participation in the strike was strong in the transport sector, including Volkswagen's Autoeuropa, halting production, and there were "different rates of participation in various parts of the country." Still, minimum public services were maintained under court orders.

The Naval Shipyards in Viana do Castelo in northern Portugal ground to a halt as all 700 workers downed tools, the local union leader, Antonio Barbosa, said.

All international flights to and from Lisbon and Porto were canceled for the duration of the 24-hour walkout, according to the website of the airport authority ANA.

"The strike is general, the attack is global!" chanted protesters in a picket line at the Lisbon airport, referring to what unions say is an attack on workers' rights.

BAILOUT CONDITIONS

The center-right government must meet EU conditions for a 78-billion-euro ($100-billion) bailout to rescue Portugal from its worst economic crisis in decades. The previous government collapsed in March after failing to push its own austerity drive through parliament and had to request the bailout.

"With what the troika is doing here, I think we have reasons for the strike. I've paid my social security since 1981, why am I going to be left without part of my Christmas bonus? I think it is wrong," said 45-year-old machinist Carlos Silva.

Portugal was the third country in the euro zone to seek a bailout, after Greece and Ireland, and is now headed for its deepest recession since it returned to democracy in 1974. The economy is set to contract nearly 3 percent next year.

In its drive to cut the budget deficit and debt, the government has ordered cuts in this year's year-end bonus for all workers and canceled holiday and year-end bonuses for civil servants next year.

Its reforms include spending cuts in everything from health services to public television. It is also reforming labor laws and has extended the working day by half an hour.

For weeks, posters have lined the streets of Lisbon urging workers to strike, while the government insists there is no way out of painful austerity.

Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, who came to power in June, said the country's priority was to beat the debt crisis.

"It is up to me to try to mobilize the Portuguese for action every day to contribute to transform Portugal," he said.

STRONG SUPPORT

Despite the protests, an opinion poll by Marktest pollsters on Thursday showed support for the ruling PSD party rising four percentage points from last month to 45 percent. The government's solid backing has been in contrast to Greece, where a national unity government was formed to push through measures to stave off bankruptcy.

Rallies were planned across the country on Thursday, but analysts note the Portuguese, unlike nations such as Greece, do not have a tradition of violent protest, and labor action in the face of the crisis has so far been low-key.

Authorities reported no serious incidents although police said vandals had smashed the windows of three tax offices in Lisbon.

But the prospect of deep belt-tightening measures, which kick in with full force next year, have fueled support and may make the strike significantly larger than one held a year ago.

Portugal must cut its budget deficit this year to 5.9 percent of gross domestic product from nearly 10 percent in 2010. In 2012, Lisbon has promised to cut the deficit to 4.5 percent of GDP. Workers' fears, especially in state companies that face heavy cuts, have been fed by unemployment, which stands at 12.4 percent and is the highest since the 1980s.

Russian probe against dead lawyer extended (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russian investigators on Thursday declined to close a probe against a Russian lawyer who died in jail of an untreated illness, extending the investigation by another two months despite his family's pleas to end it.

Sergei Magnitsky died of an untreated pancreatitis in November 2009 after spending almost a year in a Moscow jail on tax evasion charges. Investors working in Russia have said the lawyer's death and allegations of torture highlight corruption in the judicial system and presents a litmus test for President Dmitry Medvedev's pledge to cement the rule of law in the country.

Magnitsky's family petitioned to get the probe against him closed. His mother and wife have talked to prosecutors and the Interior Ministry.

But the Investigative Department of the Interior Ministry said Thursday they must still contact his other close relatives to make sure they agree. Under Russian law, once a suspect is dead authorities can close a probe with the agreement of the family.

A spokesman for the department who asked to be unnamed, citing the department's policy, said that they have not contacted all of Magnitsky's close relatives, and "haven't got a definite answer" from his mother and wife.

But Magnitsky's mother, Natalya Magnitskaya, has repeatedly petitioned to get the case closed, and told The Associated Press "there are no other relatives" except for herself, Magnitsky's widow and their two children.

"They haven't asked us about anything," she said of the department's announcement it was looking for more relatives.

The family's lawyer Nikolai Gorokhov said the decision was akin to "spitting on the grave of a dead man and his relatives."

"Magnitsky's family has repeatedly voiced their position about the illegality of the posthumous prosecution by filing formal written complaints to all Russian state bodies," Gorokhov said in an emailed statement.

Two prison doctors have been charged with oversight leading to death, but none of the officials Magnitsky accused of framing him have faced charges.

Magnitsky worked for Hermitage Capital Management, an investment fund owned and run by U.S.-born William Browder, who has since been barred from Russia as a security risk.

Magnitsky was charged with tax evasion linked to his defense of Hermitage Capital and arrested by the same police officials he had accused of a $230 million tax fraud.

His death sparked outrage in Russia and globally. The U.S. administration imposed travel restrictions on 60 Russian officials suspected of involvement in the lawyer's imprisonment and killing. Moscow retaliated by drafting a list of American officials it will bar from entering Russia.

Activists presented their report on Magnitsky's death to Medvedev in July, arguing that police investigators and prison officials are to blame for the lawyer's death. They later criticized police and investigators for putting the blame squarely on the doctors and shielding their colleagues from responsibility.

The Investigative Committee, a body that oversees high-profile investigations in Russia, is still investigating Magnitsky's death, the committee's chief, Alexander Bastrykin, told Russian news agencies on Thursday.

Bastrykin said they are investigating people who could be involved in the lawyer's death ? not only the doctors who had been charged.

The investigation "will go on until we are 100 percent sure that we have found all the officials and employees of the institutions that are partly or directly to blame for this death," he said, according to Interfax.

Intermittent Steroid Use Called OK for Wheezing Preschoolers (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Nov. 23 (HealthDay News) -- Preschoolers who have recurrent wheezing episodes but not an asthma diagnosis are often prescribed inhaled steroid medication, and new research suggests it's OK to take those medications on an as-needed basis instead of every day.

Respiratory illnesses frequently trigger severe wheezing in young children, and the treatment for some of these kids -- using inhaled steroid medications such as budesonide (Pulmicort) on a daily basis -- might expose them to more of the drugs than necessary, the researchers said.

"We learned that the daily, low-dose treatment regimen of inhaled budesonide was no better than a high-dose regimen used for seven days during a specific respiratory illness," said the study's lead author, Dr. Robert Zeiger, a clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego, and director of allergy research at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego.

"However, there are certain caveats to the findings. This is only applicable to patients similar to those studied. It would not be applicable to those with more severe wheezing episodes or those with persistent wheezing. And, parents shouldn't institute treatment for every sniffle or cold. Parents need to be instructed on when to use the treatment. They'll need to recognize past symptoms that preceded the development of a wheezing episode," Zeiger explained.

Results of the study are published in the Nov. 24 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Funding for the study was provided by the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and several academic institutions.

Daily use of inhaled budesonide is recommended for children under 5 years who've had four or more wheezing episodes during the past year, and have an increased risk of developing asthma.

"These are toddlers at high risk for asthma, but they don't have persistent symptoms. Persistent means more than twice a week. When these kids get sick, they often get very sick with respiratory symptoms," said Dr. Shean Aujla, a pediatric pulmonologist at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

While inhaled steroid medications have considerably fewer side effects than steroids taken orally, there's still concern when using any medication in the long term in children. Previous research has suggested that long-term use of inhaled corticosteroids may cause a small reduction in a child's height.

The new study sought to assess whether or not less frequent administration of inhaled steroids, but at higher doses than prescribed for daily use, would be effective.

The researchers included 278 children between the ages of 12 and 53 months (1 to 4-plus years). All of the children had a high risk of developing asthma, had recurrent wheezing episodes, and had experienced at least one wheezing episode in the past year, according to the study.

For one year, the children were randomly assigned to receive either daily treatment with 0.5 milligrams (mg) of inhaled budesonide or 1 mg twice daily for seven days at the start of a respiratory illness similar to one that caused wheezing in the past.

They found no difference between the groups for the number of wheezing episodes, the time to the first wheezing episodes or the occurrence of adverse side effects. Children in the intermittent treatment group received 104 milligrams less medication over a year than children in the daily use group, according to the study.

"This study showed that in this particular population, there was no difference in using intermittent budesonide compared to daily," Aujla said.

"We see this population a lot, and they're a challenge to treat. They may only have symptoms in the winter, or when they have a cold, and many families are concerned about using medication every day," she added.

Zeiger said the intermittent use of budesonide will likely be more convenient for parents and children, but parents "should never take wheezing lightly," he cautioned. "It can lead to severe exacerbations, ER visits and hospitalizations. Parents should seek care for a child who has frequent wheezing episodes because we have therapies that can reduce the burden of the child's illness."

George Gallup Jr., Gallup Poll founder's son, dies (AP)

PRINCETON, N.J. ? Pollster George Gallup Jr. has died in New Jersey, a year after being diagnosed with liver cancer, his family said Wednesday. He was 81.

Gallup, the son of Gallup Poll founder George Gallup, died Monday in Princeton, where he lived, according to his family.

The younger Gallup was born in Evanston, Ill., in 1930 and joined the family's polling organization in 1954, a year after graduating from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in religion.

He remained an executive in the company until he retired in 2004. While there, he pushed the polling agency into conducting surveys on religion and the views of youth.

He also wrote several books about Americans' relationship with religion, including "The Next American Spirituality" in 2002 and "The Saints Among Us" in 1992.

After the polling organization was sold to Omaha, Neb.-based Selection Research in 1988, he founded the George H. Gallup International Institute in honor of his father.

There, he and his wife, Kingsley, who died in 2007, convened seminars by leaders in the fields of health, education, the environment, religion and values to talk about ideas to solve some of the problems the Gallup polling helped identify.

Gallup had three children.

A daughter, Alison Gallup, described her father as "an unusual guy, the warmest, most approachable person you ever met."

He was an adult who had child-like curiosity ? and a child-like love of Breyers ice cream, she said.

"He has left an incredible legacy of ethics," she said. "I've never seen him do anything duplicitous."

A memorial is set for Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. at Princeton Chapel.

Natalie Wood witness says she heard 'Help me, I'm drowning'

Natalie Wood witness Marilyn Wayne heard 'a woman's voice crying for help,' on the night of Nov. 28, 1981. Ms. Wayne is the first new Natalie Wood witness to emerge since the investigation was reopened Friday.

A new witness has emerged in the investigation into the death of Natalie Wood.

California resident Marilyn Wayne said that she heard ?A woman?s voice, crying for help from drowning, awakened John, and he awakened me. ?Help me, someone please help me, I?m drowning? we heard repeatedly. Alarmed, I called out to my son, who also heard the cries, and looked at his new digital watch: it was just minutes after 11:00 P.M.,? said Ms. Wayne in a sworn statement.

ABC News reports that Wayne said she and her boyfriend, John Payne, were sleeping aboard a sailboat, the Capricorn, on Nov. 28, 1981. The window of the cabin was open. According to Wayne?s statement, Payne turned on the sailboat?s beam light and played it over the area while she went up onto the deck, though it was dark and damp and she says that she was unable to see anything.

Homicide detectives who reopened the investigation into the drowning death of Wood? after three decades said on Friday that the film star's husband, actor Robert Wagner, was not considered a suspect.

The new inquiry into Wood's mysterious drowning off the California coast in 1981 comes amid new attention to the case on its 30th anniversary. The captain of the yacht she was on before her death now says that he lied to police at the time and holds Wagner responsible for her death.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. John Corina told reporters at a news conference on Friday that two homicide detectives had been assigned to reexamine new tips.

"Recently we have received information which we felt was substantial enough to make us take another look," Corina said. He declined to elaborate on the new information.

Asked by reporters if the now-81-year-old Wagner, one of three people on board the "Splendour" with Wood that night, was a suspect, Corina responded: "No."

Wood's body was found floating in a Catalina Island cove on the morning of November 29, 1981. The 43-year-old actress was dressed for bed in a long nightgown and socks, but wearing a red down jacket over her nightclothes.

The Los Angeles County Coroner at the time ruled the "West Side Story" star's death an accidental drowning, but questions have lingered for 30 years.

Corina said her death remained classified an accidental drowning, but added: "If our investigation at the end of it points to something else, then we'll address that."

Sheriff's officials have asked that anyone with knowledge about the case contact homicide investigators.

Astro Sort of Revokes Apology, Believes X Factor Results were "Jiggy"

Perhaps Astro is not so sorry after all.

Less than a week after sulking over his placement in the bottom two of Thursday's results show, and just a couple days after apologizing for his immature behavior, this 15-year old X Factor contestant is speaking out yet again.

And he's telling The New York Post the show was "punishing" him for an off-camera dispute in which Astro insisted on wearing Beats headphones even though the show has a deal with Sony.

Astro on The X Factor

“I don’t see how you can have the most followers on Twitter out of everybody in the competition and get voted in the bottom two," Astro aid. "So, I thought something was jiggy.”

Simon Cowell berated the finalist, saying his actions last week showed "disrespect" to his mom. But Astro insists his mother was behind him all the way.

"She knew what was going on,” he says. “She was tellin’ me, ‘Just leave. You need to leave and go home.’ It’s stupid, you know. But I told my mom, ‘Let’s at least try it one more time. Let’s get one more week in.’"

Meaning, what? Astro will walk away this week if he's again in the bottom pair? It's unclear, but Astro defends his attitude by saying The X Factor is a "competition."

“We are all fighting to stay here. How you going to say I’m cocky? Muhammad Ali does this. It’s not cocky, it’s confidence," he says. "Where I am from, I had to fight every day just to keep my name, Astro. I had to battle every day with someone on the corner. On the way to school, on the way everywhere... I am not backing down.”

Aung San Suu Kyi: Pro-Democracy Leader Plans To Run For Myanmar Parliament

YANGON, Myanmar -- Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi intends to run for parliament in upcoming by-elections, a decision that was expected after her party decided last week to rejoin mainstream politics in long-isolated Myanmar.

Nyan Win, the spokesman of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, said Monday she has not yet decided which district she will seek to represent. But she "has the intention to stand for the elections," he told The Associated Press.

In a landmark development, the NLD decided on Friday to rejoin politics and register for future elections, signaling its confidence in recent reforms by the nominally civilian government that took power earlier this year.

The military-aligned ruling party won the November 2010 parliamentary elections held by the junta as part of its promise to introduce democracy and relinquish power after nearly five decades of military rule.

The NLD boycotted the elections because of a law that had prevented Nobel peace laureate Suu Kyi from running. The new government, however, later scrapped the law, allowing the NLD to take part in the political reforms now under way.

According to the new election law, a registered party is required to run for at least three seats in the legislature, made up of 224 members in the upper house and 440 members in the lower house. Of these, 48 seats are vacant for which special elections will be held, although no date has been set.

Suu Kyi had hinted on Friday that she would run for a parliamentary seat in the special elections, saying: "If one is engaged in politics, one has to do what is necessary. If I feel that I should take part in elections, I will participate."

She, however, cautioned that "the road ahead is full of difficulties and the road to democracy is endless."

Bringing Suu Kyi's party back into the fold would give the government greater legitimacy at home and abroad. It has already won cautious praise from international observers and critics, including the United States, for introducing reforms.

President Thein Sein, a former army officer, has shown a willingness to talk to Suu Kyi, lifted some restrictions on the media and the Internet, legalized unions and scrapped an unpopular dam project. Still, hundreds of political prisoners remain in jails.

Thein Sein has welcomed the NLD's decision to rejoin politics, saying it was "a positive signal."

Scientists launch international competition to create the heaviest element ever (Yahoo! News)

Manipulating the laws of nature can carve you a place in history

While much of the world spends its evenings watching dancers, singers, and trivia junkies battle it out in front of live studio audiences, teams of scientists from all corners of the earth are engaged in a much more heated competition. Their goal? To be the first to create the heaviest elements in the universe ? and gain all the scientific fame and fortune that such a discovery brings.

The two weighty elements in question are numbers 119 and 120 on the periodic table, with those numeric values equalling the number of protons their atoms contain.?It may sound like a complicated task, and while the science behind creating new elements is complex, the basic concept is rather straightforward. In order to create element 119, researchers are slamming a titanium metal plate with atoms of the element berkelium, hoping that titanium's 22 protons and berkelium's 97 protons will combine to create an atom with 119 protons.

The two frontrunners in the competition are a team comprised of scientists from the United States, Japan, Norway, and several Western European countries and a team of American and Russian researchers working out of a lab in Russia. Unfortunately, even if a single atom of a new super-heavy element is created, the procedure must be verified by an independent laboratory before a winner is declare ? a process that could take decades. But for the bright minds working day and night to get their names in the history books, the wait is probably worth it.

Now a Soap Opera, Heavily-Backed SOPA Copyright Bill Gets New Bipartisan and Popular Opposition

mozilla-logo-censoredThe ?Stop Online Piracy Act? (SOPA) had looked set for a quick and quiet passing through the House after it was introduced late last month. A string of Democrats and Republicans, and various big-media affiliated interest groups had lined up behind it, while the internet had mostly stayed on the sidelines. But a major outcry this week -- and especially today -- could change that. The bill, which has been presented by its supporters as a bipartisan effort to punish "rogue" infringing sites, is now being questioned by members of both parties for the potential damage it could also do to innovation. That's on top of a concerted effort by major web companies and advocacy groups to communicate their opposition, via their own sites and an open letter to Congress yesterday (that's being run as a full-page ad in The New York Times).

Jay-Z, Jimmy Fallon: GQ Men Could Take Down People's Sexiest

GQ held it's annual Men of the Year bash in Hollywood Thursday night.
By Jim Cantiello

HOLLYWOOD — The GQ Men of the Year are ready to rumble with People magazine's "Sexiest Men."

At GQ's 16th annual "Men of the Year" Party at the Chateau Marmont, honorees Jay-Z, Jimmy Fallon and Michael Fassbender joked that if push came to shove, their posse of powerful GQ players would dominate Bradley Cooper's sexy gang, which includes "Glee" star Darren Criss, the male stars of "Parks and Recreation," Tim McGraw, Joe Manganiello, Joel McHale, and dozens more.

GQ top dog Jay-Z even has a strategy in place. "I'll take on the whole entire cast of 'Parks and Recreation.' I'll leave Justin [Timberlake] to take care of 'Glee' and Jimmy Fallon could karate-chop the rest of those guys," Jay joked.

Fallon was less sure about the match-up. "['Parks and Recreation' character Ron Swanson] is a tough guy. That's a tough call, but you know, I gotta see what the arena is. I gotta look at the variables there." Meanwhile, "True Blood" star Manganiello thinks he could hold his own against the GQ gang. "I'm fighting for People presently, so you know who I'm going to say," he said before adding, "I think we should do it for charity!"

"Revenge" star Emily van Camp was torn. "[Co-star] Joshua Bowman's one of the sexiest so I'd have to say Josh," she said. But does she really think Bowman could take on Jay-Z? "That's a tough one. Don't tell him I said so but no," she laughed.

"Teen Wolf" star Colton Haynes had no qualms picking Team GQ despite co-star Tyler Posey repping on People's list. "We worked out with the same trainer today and I gave him a lot of crap about that, so just to spite him, I'm with GQ," Haynes quipped.

"21 Jump Street" star Rob Riggle has a theory as to why the well-dressed men of GQ would beat up the half-naked pretty boys of People. "[Team GQ has] more of a manly man's, unshaven look I think. They're gonna be a little tougher. They got a little more grit." Actress Lizzie Caplan snarked that her skinny "Party Down" partner in crime Adam Scott would lead the Sexiest Men to victory. "I mean, clearly he's enormous and so cut. I'm surprised he's not on the cover of Men's Fitness, like, all the time," she said with a wry smile.

If there's one thing everyone could agree on, it's that GQ's secret weapon is one of the December issue's four cover subjects, Mila Kunis. "I think Mila would kick Bradley [Cooper's] ass," assured "The Killing" star Billy Campbell.

"I think Mila Kunis could take some people out if she wanted to," Fallon seconded.

We wondered what Justin Timberlake would do in a GQ/People magazine knife fight, however. The singer-turned-actor appears on both lists this year. Maybe he could be the ref.

Is Android becoming the Windows of mobile malware? (Digital Trends)

android virus

Juniper Networks is raising eyebrows in the mobile industry this morning with a new report claiming the incidence of malware targeting Android devices has risen by 472 percent since July of this year. Presumably, that number is augmented by ?hundreds? of malware samples the company uncovered in a series of?third-party?Russian app stores. Juniper describes the Russian malware cache as just the ?tip of the iceberg,? believing there may be thousands of more malware apps waiting to be discovered.

Although many security firms still characterize the threat of mobile malware as relatively low, it?s important to know that those firms are generally comparing the number of threats faced by Android and other mobile operating systems to the those faced by Windows ? which is the absolute king of malware, assaulted by hundreds and even thousands of new trojans, worms, exploits, and variants every day. Saying a platform faces a low threat compared to Windows isn?t saying much at all.

But Juniper?s figures highlight the growing threat of mobile malware, particularly on Android. How do Juniper?s numbers hold up, what?s to blame for rising Android malware, and how can Android users protect themselves and their devices?

Juniper?s figures

Juniper Networks Android Malware infographic Nov 2011

According to Juniper Network, the amount of malware targeting Android has jumped by 472 percent since July, punctuated by very sharp increases in October and November. Juniper says they were seeing steady increases in the amount of Android malware they intercepted in July and August, which saw incidence rates increase by 10 and 18 percent, respectively. However, in September Juniper intercepted more than double the amount of Android malware it had in July (up 110 percent) and that figure jumped to either 111 or 171 percent from October 1 through November 10. (See Juniper?s infographic for more detail?the infographic claims a 111 percent increase most recently, But Juniper?s text says 171 percent.)

The figures echo similarly alarming percentages from other security vendors. This summer, Trend Micro claimed the incidence of Android malware had increased 1,410 percent from January to July 2011. It?published an infographic, too.

Curiously, Juniper provides no hard figures to accompany its percentages, so it?s difficult to know what those percentages mean in absolute terms. It would be nice to compare the number of malware apps out there (and their interception rates) to the number of available Android apps or the number of apps distributed over the same period of time. After all, if a small town of 5,000 people had one serious traffic accident in 2010 and then two serious traffic accidents in 2011, the rate would be up by an alarming 100 percent! However, number of accidents in proportion to the number of drivers ? let alone the number of hours driven in the town during the year ? would still be very, very low. Juniper Networks does describe the cache of Russian malware it found as ?hundreds? of apps, but it?s not clear if those are included in the firm?s 472 percent increase, and offers no other hard figures.

Symantec and Kaspersky similarly offer percentages for recent increases in Android malware, but seem to withhold hard figures ? or, at least, I haven?t been able to find them. McAfee is slightly more helpful: In August it reported a 76 percent increase in malware targeting Android during the second quarter of 2011, and gave a specific number of threats it had identified: 44. Just this week, McAfee described the total number of malicious apps in the wild as ?approximately 200??and that?s across all platforms, including Symbian, Java ME, Windows Mobile, iOS, and others.

The number of apps available on the Android Market stands at about 350,000. Although the total number of threat apps is never truly known ? even to security researchers ? the alarmingly large percentage figures from Juniper and McAfee do seem to suffer from a bit of the small-town problem. Despite some high-profile malware removals from the Android Market (like DroidDream trojans earlier this year), ?in absolute terms, Android malware still a very small portion of the broader Android software ecosystem.

Types of Android malware

There does seem to be basic agreement on the types of Android malware out there. The bulk acts as spyware and tries to steal personal data, including contacts, location, personally identifying information email, messages, and data stashed in log files and other areas of the device. Spyware can also potentially control an Android device, meaning it could place calls, send messages, restart apps, disable locks, control vibrate alerts, and (of course) access the Internet to send collected data to the malware authors ??? or download and install new malware packages.

Spyware represents a bit of a longer-term game for malware authors: They?re hoping they?ll get usable (and sellable) information by keeping an eye on users? phones, and they?ll make their money selling collected email addresses (and potentially financial information) to spammers and cybercriminals.

One form of Android malware that has immediate payoff for malware authors is are SMS Trojans: apps that appear to do something fun or useful, but in the background send SMS messages to premium rate numbers ? the same way many voting competitions, music and ringtone services, and other businesses collect money via text messages. Once those messages are sent, the malware authors have their money, and consumers don?t have much (or any) recourse. The bulk of Android malware apps Juniper says it found in Russian third-party Android markets are SMS Trojans.

Pointing fingers

So even if malware isn?t quite overrunning the ecosystem yet, where is all this malware coming from? Security firms seem to pretty squarely place the bulk of Android malware at the feet of cybercriminals who used to target Java ME and Symbian phones. As those platforms have declined, they?ve moved along to Android, which enables them to leverage some of their working knowledge of Java and is also, conveniently, now the world?s hottest-selling smartphone platform.

In terms of distribution, security firms all agree that third-party Android app stores run a higher risk of malware than trusted sources. A number of Android exploits have been distributed via third-party app stores in Russia and China ? heck, one Chinese example of Android malware uses a public blog as its command-and-control center. The appeal of these app stores in their respective markets is obvious: They use local languages, and their selection of apps and new items is going to be much more in tune with local culture than the broader Android Market. Nonetheless, most of those app stores are completely unregulated and unmonitored: Almost anyone can upload anything, safe or not.

That doesn?t let Google?s Android Market off the hook. Although McAfee recommends Android Market specifically as a trusted source for safe Android apps, other security outfits aren?t so kind. Juniper in particular rips into Google?s management of the Android Market:

?These days, it seems all you need [to upload malware to Android Market] is a developer account, that is relatively easy to anonymize, pay $25 and you can post your applications,? Juniper wrote in its blog. ?With no upfront review process, no one checking to see that your application does what it says, just the world?s largest majority of smartphone users skimming past your application?s description page with whatever description of the application the developer chooses to include.?

Google famously does not review submissions to the Android Market, or require code-signing by a trust authority, although developers must at least code-sign with self-signed certificates. Although Google will remove malicious apps once they?re discovered, realistically that can?t happen until the apps have victimized users.

Staying safe

Android users can take some basic steps to keep their devices and their data safe. Good tips include:
  • Disable the ?unknown sources? option for installing apps in the Android device?s Applications Settings menu. This will help prevent users from inadvertently installing software when, say, accidentally following a malware link in an SMS message, spam, or social networking site. It will also keep the device out of most third-party Android app stores, which seem to be a prime distribution vector for Android malware. However, this may not be an option if users need to sideload custom Android apps for, say, business or work purposes.
  • Research apps before downloading or buying them. Try to stick with apps that have broad third-party recommendations and come from reputable publishers. Check both an app?s and publisher?s ratings.
  • Carefully check app?s permissions. When you install an app, Android will present a list of hardware and software components that the app wants to access, including things like location data, a device?s camera, the Internet, storage, system tools, MMS/SMS, and making phone calls. If the requested permissions don?t seem reasonable, don?t allow the app to install. For instance, a game probably doesn?t have any need to access your contacts, and a photo organizer doesn?t need to send SMS messages.
Makers of security and antivirus software will, of course, recommend users download, install (and, hopefully, purchase) antivirus software for Android. However, the jury seems to be out on how useful security and antivirus apps are for Android ? at least at the moment. A new study from AV-Test (PDF) finds that almost all free Android malware apps don?t offer significant protection against existing Android malware. Paid Android security packages from F-Secure and Kaspersky fared better, but only managed to detect about half the installed threats tested by AV-Test, although they did very well with blocking malware installation.

The most important thing is probably to be aware that there is malware for Android, and let common sense be your guide. If an app seems to good to be true, it might just be carrying a hidden payload that?s after your money and personal information.

'HTC Zeta' renders appear, rumored to be a 2.5GHz quad-core, ICS-powered beast

HTC Zeta

A few days ago we were introduced to the Tegra 3-powered HTC Edge, rumored to be one of the first quad-core Android smartphones. Today sees the emergence of renders of another rumored quad-core HTC phone, the "HTC Zeta". Accordig to Engadget, the Zeta's striking design isn't the only remarkable thing about the device, as it reportedly packs a quad-core Qualcomm APQ8064 CPU at a whopping 2.5 GHz.

Other reported specs include 1GB of RAM, a 4.5-inch 720p display of some sort, 32GB internal storage and an ample 1830 mAh battery. The phone is also said to include an 8MP rear camera capable of 1080p recording, along with the standard 1.3MP front-facer. As you'd expect from a premium HTC handset that's likely to launch in 2012, Sense and Beats Audio are also included, along with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Interestingly the phone is said to weigh just 146 grams, significantly less than many other HTC devices around the 4.3-4.7-inch mark. To put that into perspective, the Thunderbolt weighs in at 175 grams, while the recently-launched Rezound tips the scales at 170 grams.

For the moment, of course, all this is well within rumor territory, and that'll remain the case until such time as HTC announces this device. It could turn out to be little more than a fanciful render of a product that might never come to market. But if it isn't, we certainly look forward to getting our hands on the Zeta, most likely at CES or Mobile World Congress next year.

Penn State's Sandusky denies he is a pedophile (Reuters)

STATE COLLEGE (Reuters) ? Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State University assistant football coach charged with child sex abuse, said on Monday he is not a pedophile, but admitted he showered with young boys.

In a full-court media press across two television networks, Sandusky and his attorney, Joe Amendola, said they have answers for all 40 charges that Pennsylvania prosecutors have leveled.

"I am innocent of those charges," Sandusky told NBC's Bob Costas in a telephone interview with the television network on Monday.

The former coach and founder of The Second Mile charity for disadvantaged youth acknowledged that after workouts he has showered with boys.

"I have hugged them and I have touched their leg without intent of sexual contact," Sandusky told Costas.

He admitted, "I shouldn't have showered with those kids," and stressed, "I am not sexually attracted to young boys."

The allegations of sex crimes and their cover-up have rocked the university. The fallout ended the career of legendary head football coach Joe Paterno, who along with the university's president was fired on November 9 by the board of trustees.

Sandusky, once considered a likely successor to Paterno, is accused of sexually assaulting eight boys over more than a decade. The New York Times reported late Monday that ten more suspected victims have come forward and police were working to confirm the allegations.

The 67-year-old Sandusky is just a "big overgrown kid," his lawyer told CNN in a separate interview on Monday night.

For each charge, "We have an answer," Amendola said.

He painted a sympathetic picture of his client, saying he is worried for Sandusky's health.

Amendola said he had advised Sandusky and his wife to leave State College, Pennsylvania, to relax, but Sandusky told him he would be recognizable anywhere.

In addition, the defense team is having trouble finding some of the alleged victims mentioned in a grand jury report that was released November 4, Amendola said.

INFORMATION ON LOCKER-ROOM INCIDENT

Sandusky retired from Penn State in 1999. The grand jury alleged, among other charges, that Sandusky had sexually assaulted a boy in a Penn State football locker room in 2002 and university officials failed to report the incident.

Penn State assistant football coach Mike McQueary, who witnessed the alleged incident while a graduate assistant, is on paid administrative leave from the university.

Amendola said he believes he has identified the child involved in the alleged incident.

"What McQueary said he saw, we have information that that child says that never happened," Amendola said.

The intertwined relationship between Penn State, its football program and The Second Mile charity continues to be a focus of the developing scandal.

The charity said on Monday it has accepted the resignation of Jack Raykovitz, its chief executive for 28 years, and that it had opened an internal investigation.

According to a grand jury report, the charity learned almost a decade ago that Sandusky had showered with a young boy. Like Penn State officials, it did not inform police.

Meanwhile, a New York-based charity for disadvantaged kids -- The Fresh Air Fund -- said it was checking on whether any of its members might have spent time at the home of Sandusky.

The Big Ten athletic conference said on Monday it will remove Paterno's name from the trophy that will be given to the winner of its first-ever championship game, scheduled to be played in Indianapolis in December.

"The trophy and its namesake are intended to be celebratory and aspirational, not controversial," Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said in a statement.

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
